Pecan & Pine Hardware, week of Oct. 19. A strong cold front moved through Friday with a wind advisory and gusts that could reach 50 mph, which makes this the week to talk about stakes and tie-downs. Halloween falls on a Saturday, so porch builds start now, and Old Lake Highlands judges its yard decorating contest on Wednesday night. The forecast then warms into the 80s, a good run for fall planting. Three trends, three posts, and one watch-out on a burn ban that just ended.

Schedule first. Idea 1 on Tuesday, so it lands before Old Lake Highlands judges yards on Wednesday night.

Three timely local trends

1

Halloween on a Saturday, with the neighbors keeping score

Halloween falls on Saturday, Oct. 31, so porches go up this weekend and next. Old Lake Highlands holds its Halloween Yard Decorating Contest with judging on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and the same association is building a trick-or-treat house map for Oct. 31. The Lake Highlands PID runs a Trunk or Treat at 2 p.m. that day in the LH Village parking lot on Skillman.

The money is moving too. The National Retail Federation forecasts $13.5 billion in Halloween spending this year, with decorations at $4.3 billion and 78% of consumers planning to buy them. The big box sells the headline piece, and Rolling Stone lists Home Depot's 12-foot skeleton at $299. A neighborhood hardware store owns the part that comes next, the stakes, cords, timers and hooks that keep it standing. Lean into the helper role.

2

A warm, dry week for fall planting

After a Sunday morning that starts in the upper 30s, the National Weather Service forecast has DFW sunny all week, with highs near 75 on Monday, 79 on Tuesday, 84 on Wednesday and 86 on Thursday. CBS Texas adds that dew points stay in the 40s and 50s, so mornings stay crisp.

The planting advice lines up. Texas A&M AgriLife calls late fall the ideal time to plant trees and shrubs so roots settle in before summer heat, and the Texas A&M Forest Service puts the best tree planting window at November through early spring. The Collin County Master Gardeners put it plainly this month with the line "we're planting in October because of next July." Dallas still caps sprinkler watering at two days a week, which is worth a line on every planting post.

3

The first freeze is a month out, and Friday was a preview

The National Weather Service Fort Worth office lists Nov. 22 as the average first freeze at DFW, and its records include a freeze as early as Oct. 22 in 1898. This week's forecast shows nothing close, even though Sunday morning may touch the 30s. Friday's wind advisory, with gusts up to 50 mph, gave the neighborhood a free demo of why outdoor gear needs to be tied down.

Keep a faucet cover and pipe insulation post ready in drafts. Publish it the day a freeze shows up in the forecast, because the early reminder is the one neighbors screenshot and send along.

Neighbor watch, week of Oct. 19

Use it to time a post or tag a neighbor.

  1. Oktoberfest Dallas

The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands runs Oktoberfest Dallas on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Flag Pole Hill Park, with shuttle parking at Norbuck Park, the KayCee Club and Lake Highlands High School. Proceeds go to local scholarships and nonprofits.

For Pecan & Pine A short Friday wish for the Exchange Club is a neighborly tag that costs nothing.

  2. Lake Highlands UMC trunk-or-treat

Lake Highlands UMC hosts a trunk-or-treat and chili cook-off on Sunday, Oct. 25 from half past four to half past six in the evening at 9015 Plano Rd. and expects 250 to 300 children. Volunteers decorate the trunks and there is no RSVP.

For Pecan & Pine Decorated trunks need lights and cords, so Tuesday's kit post can add trunk lights to the caption.

  3. St. James pumpkin patch

The St. James pumpkin patch is open through Oct. 31 at Audelia and McCree, with hours until 7 p.m. every day. Proceeds support youth ministries.

For Pecan & Pine Slide 1 already has a pumpkin beside the kit, which matches what families carry home from the patch.

  4. Light Up the Highlands

The Lake Highlands Junior Women's League hosts Light Up the Highlands on Sunday, Nov. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lake Highlands Town Center. Entry is free and guests bring two non-perishable food items.

For Pecan & Pine It is the neighborhood's holiday kickoff, so a lights, timers and hooks post can run the week before.
