Día de los Muertos season starts this week too, with the Latino Cultural Center festival on Saturday, Oct. 24. Three trends, three posts, and one watch-out on handling the day with care.

Schedule first. Idea 3 on Tuesday, since the altar needs a week to gather photos. Idea 1 goes up Friday.

Three timely local trends

1

Game nights on patio weather

The Mavericks open the season in Houston on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and play their home opener against the Spurs on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Stars announced a six-game homestand that starts Oct. 20. The Cowboys visit the Eagles on Monday, Oct. 26, with kickoff a quarter past seven on ESPN and ABC, per the Dallas Morning News and the team schedule.

Saturday is crowded. The Mavs tip off at 7 p.m., the Irving Taco Festival runs 4 to 11 p.m. with free entry, and the Latino Cultural Center festival fills the late morning. The weather helps a patio. The National Weather Service has sunny skies with highs from 75 on Monday to 86 on Thursday, and D Magazine's October column says fair weather and patio weather arrived together. Big trays travel well, and a pickup window before tip-off fits a workday.

Halloween Saturday, an extra hour Sunday

Halloween falls on Saturday, Oct. 31, and daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks fall back an hour. The Texas Association of Broadcasters lists the same date. Sunday also brings a noon home game for the Cowboys against the Cardinals, per the team schedule.

That stacks a late night, a bonus hour and a noon kickoff into one brunch window. A taquería with a patio can own that morning.

Día de los Muertos in Oak Cliff

Visit Dallas lists a full run of events. The Latino Cultural Center altar exhibition runs Oct. 20 to Nov. 6 with a festival on Oct. 24, the Bath House Cultural Center's 40th annual exhibition runs through Nov. 7, and the Dallas Día de los Muertos Parade and Festival fills City Hall Plaza on Oct. 31, listed by NBC 5. The Oak Cliff celebration is Sunday, Nov. 1 at CocoAndré on Centre Street, free to attend.

CocoAndré recently finished moving into a larger Oak Cliff space, according to D Magazine, which makes this block busy and personal for a family-run Oak Cliff spot. The best content shows the restaurant taking part alongside its neighbors.

Idea 1. The game-night tray

Format

Five-slide carousel Friday, plus a story reminder Monday at lunch.

Caption

Mavs home opener Saturday. Cowboys at the Eagles Monday night. Pre-order a taco tray by 4 and grab it on the way home, so the only thing you're yelling at is the TV. Link in bio.

Visual direction

Warm window light, one real hand per slide and a TV glowing soft in the background of the first. The last slide is a text card with the pre-order cutoff. Use navy and silver napkins and skip team logos, which belong to the leagues and clubs.

Why now

Several game nights in one week, plus patio weather. Pre-orders smooth out the Saturday crush.

Shot list

About 10 minutes, phone only, no faces needed

Slide 5 is a text card, so there is nothing to shoot.

Idea 2. Spend the extra hour on chilaquiles

Format

Three-frame story of still photos, posted Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31.

Caption

The clocks fall back tonight, which means Sunday comes with a bonus hour. Spend it on chilaquiles. Brunch starts at [time], and the Cowboys kick off at noon.

Visual direction

Three still frames in the same morning patio light, a clock, a plate and a pour. The caption words go on as stickers in the app, so the photos stay clean.

Why now

Built on the Nov. 1 time change and the noon kickoff, both sourced above.

Shot list

About 10 minutes, phone only, no faces needed

Caption

Our ofrenda is up for Día de los Muertos. If you'd like to add a photo of someone you love, bring it by this week and we'll give it a place on the altar. Each name gets a marigold.

Visual direction

The restaurant's own ofrenda in soft natural light, marigolds, candles, pan de muerto and framed photos, shot straight on and unhurried. No stickers on the photos.

Why now

Community events start Oct. 20, and the Oak Cliff celebration is a neighborhood event on Nov. 1.

Shot list

About 10 minutes, phone only, no faces needed

Slide 1 is the altar, slide 2 the hands and slide 3 the sign.

Neighbor watch, week of Oct. 19

Use it to time a post or tag a neighbor.

  1. The Kessler Theater

Katie Pruitt plays Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 1230 W. Davis St., with doors at 7 p.m. and the show at 8. Pete Yorn's Saturday, Oct. 24 show is marked sold out with the same hours.

For Brisa With a sold-out show on Saturday, Friday's tray post can mention pickup before 6.

  2. Oak Cliff Art Walk

The sixth Art Walk opens Friday, Oct. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. and runs Saturday, Oct. 24 from 11 to 7 at 900 E. Clarendon Dr. It is free, brings together more than 275 artists, businesses and community groups, and has food and drinks on site.

For Brisa Saturday is crowded, so a story that credits one local artist and points to the tray pre-order fits the day.

  3. Bishop Bazaar

The market returns Sunday, Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at W. 9th St. and Bishop Lane, with 150-plus vendors, per its fall schedule.

For Brisa A brunch-then-browse story gives people a plan for the whole Sunday.

  4. El Jardín Café

The coffee shop debuted at 714 W. Davis St. in early October, with café de olla, banana horchata lattes and conchas on the menu, according to Hoodline.

For Brisa A coffee and pastry counter makes a natural neighbor for a brunch spot, so a welcome comment from Brisa reads as friendly and costs nothing.

  5. CocoAndré

The family business at 423 Centre St. finished moving into its larger space, reported by the Dallas Observer on Oct. 1. It hosts the free Día de los Muertos Oak Cliff on Sunday, Nov. 1, with local vendors listed on Mato.

For Brisa The ofrenda post can tag the host and point to Nov. 1.
